Happy 75th to my father-in-law who unexpectedly sh

Happy 75th to my father-in-law who unexpectedly shuffled off this mortal coil in late November.

Barry (Baz to those he loved) was born in Birkenhead, England in 1951. He trained as a chemical operator and started his career with Shell UK. Expansion of the Bruce Heavy Water Plant in Kincardine prompted him to move his young family to Canada in late November of 1977 - just in time to experience the December 9th snowstorm that dumped nearly 40 inches of snow on SW Ontario in 48 hours! Despite the snow, Barry stayed and enjoyed a 32-year career as a Chemical Operator at OPG/Bruce Power, finishing his career in Procurement and Modifications. After retirement, Baz became a dedicated volunteer board member and champion of Kincardine’s Scottish Festival.

Baz was a generous man, with a keen sense of humour - he always ready with a witty one-liner. He was known to everyone as someone to call when something needed repair and would arrive with tools (and Owen in tow!) ready to fix anything. Baz loved camping, and traveling and was never one to miss an opportunity to bathe in the warmth of the sun, especially when it was tropical. He experimented annually with ways to reap a harvest from his vegetable garden and keep fish in his pond before the deer and woodland creatures, or heron (respectively) of Bruce County had their fill.

He will be remembered fondly as the ultimate supervisor of tasks, a connoisseur of the Tetley tea bag, perfectly poured pints, a taste for chocolate mousse, and a passion for electronic dance music. His love for us was rivalled only by his love and dedication for the Liverpool Football Club. #YNWA

Baz is survived by his wife Tanya, children Nina Jones (Todd Porter); Jamie Jones (Richelle Forsey); and Owen Jones (Emalee Dell). He was the prankster grandad to Callum Porter and Hunter Jones.

Respecting his wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life for Baz will be held this spring in Kincardine.

Hug your people tight and tell them you love them every day.

2 years ago today. @mister._.rain and I installed “Leaf Me Be” at Ontario Place 🍂🍁❤️ Heart shaped leaf garlands from the leaves of the trees of Ontario Place. “Leaf Me Be” was manually typed onto many of the leaves.

It is only by respecting nature that we begin to stop harming ourselves.

I have been capturing 1 minute “still videos” as way to slow down and examine the everyday. This one is subtle, and when seen in the palm of a hand obscures.

The Dolime Quarry moves up to ~11 million litres o

The Dolime Quarry moves up to ~11 million litres of water in their daily operations.

Guelph relies almost entirely on groundwater for its drinking water.

In 2022 the Dolime Quarry lands were rezoned to be included in Guelph’s municipal boundaries, this rezoning allows for future residential development on the land and protects the aquitard (the barrier below and just above the groundwater supply) from contamination (when quarrying ceases).

I am thrilled to have this piece included in the Tom Thomson Art Gallery’s juried exhibition ‘Convergence’ along side some seriously talented artists from the community! The exhibition explores environmental themes including ecology, climate change, sustainability, and our evolving relationship with the natural world.

Convergence opens this Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, and runs until January 17.

And for those curious about some tungsten facts….

Tungsten (W, atomic number 74), also called Wolfram, is a silver-grey metallic element with the highest melting point of any metal (3410° C). Tungsten has a high density, high strength at elevated temperatures, and extreme hardness. Tungsten metal was first isolated in 1783.

Tungsten is used to make wear resistant abrasives cutting tools, hard permanent magnets (with steel), the printing nozzle for 3D printing, and the filament in incandescent light bulbs.

Oxides of tungsten are used in manufacturing of ceramic glazes, and tungsten salts are used in chemical and tanning industries.

Canada was a major producer of tungsten ore and concentrate until 1986, when increased exports from the China caused a price collapse and eventually forced Canadian mining operations to close.
